Perplexity’s local AI agent comes to Windows — if your graphics card has 24 GB
Portable Computer runs a 27-billion-parameter Qwen model entirely on an NVIDIA RTX GPU, and work done on the device costs no credits.
Perplexity brought Portable Computer, the local version of its task-running agent Perplexity Computer, to its Windows app on 14 September 2026. NVIDIA announced the release on its blog, describing an agent that plans and carries out multistep tasks using models running on the PC itself.
The model underneath is Qwen 3.8 27B, post-trained by Perplexity for its agent and optimised for NVIDIA RTX GPUs. It needs a GeForce RTX or RTX PRO card with at least 24 GB of video memory — in consumer terms an RTX 3090, 3090 Ti, 4090 or 5090, which leaves out most gaming cards.
According to NVIDIA, work completed on the device does not consume Perplexity Computer credits and files stay on the machine. The agent can still hand harder research and reasoning to Perplexity’s cloud models, which do use credits. Portable Computer on Windows is limited to Perplexity’s Pro and Max plans.
It is one of the clearest signs yet that commercial AI products are starting to treat the graphics card in a home PC as a place to run real work, not only a gaming accessory.
